The project designs a covering for the influence area and the current underground passages allowing the union of two disconnected parts of the city.
The new covering creates a new covered public space, protected from wind, rain and snow, like a hall of the metro stations. It redefines a new public and relational space for the city of Warsaw able to support the interchange between vehicles, people and cultures.
Distances and dimensions of surrounding buildings such as the Palace of Culture are a strong symbol for the entire area. The smaller dimensions of the existing building compared with the immediate surroundings impede the symbolic representative task that the building is required to accomplish. Conversely the scale of the intervention suits to the urban scale redefining a horizontal doorway to the city.
The covering provides with a yellow_red area recalling the symbolic colors of the city flag. Overlaying on the Marzalkowska expressway a glass flag brightened by daylight promotes and identifies the Rotunda influence area.
The Rotunda is designed with a new metallic skin that follows the triangular texture of the historical covering. The inside is redefined with a new distributive layout.
